When temperatures begin to drop, preparing your mini excavator for winter storage is essential for protecting your equipment and extending its service life.
Cold weather, moisture, and long periods of inactivity can affect the battery, fuel system, hydraulic components, and undercarriage. A few simple preparation steps can help reduce maintenance issues and make it easier to return to work in spring.
Before storage, thoroughly clean your mini excavator, especially the tracks, undercarriage, bucket, and areas where mud and debris tend to accumulate. Remove built-up dirt and allow the machine to dry completely.
Inspect the machine for oil leaks, damaged hoses, loose bolts, worn tracks, and other visible issues. Check the bucket pins, bushings, and attachment connections, and complete any scheduled maintenance before storage.
Check the engine oil, hydraulic oil, and coolant levels and condition. Make sure the coolant provides adequate freeze protection for the lowest temperatures expected in your area. Always use the recommended coolant type and mixture.
For the fuel system, check the fuel tank and water separator for accumulated water. Follow the engine manufacturer's storage recommendations regarding fuel levels, fuel quality, and approved additives.
Cold weather can reduce battery performance. Inspect the battery terminals and connections, ensure it is properly charged, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for long-term battery storage or disconnection.
Lubricate the designated grease points according to the maintenance schedule. Where practical, fully retract the hydraulic cylinders to reduce exposed piston rod length.
Protect exposed cylinder rods using the method recommended by the manufacturer. Park the machine on firm, level, and well-drained ground, and lower the bucket, blade, and other working attachments safely to the ground.
Whenever possible, store your mini excavator in a dry, sheltered, and well-ventilated location. Indoor storage helps protect the machine from snow, rain, and harsh weather.
If indoor storage is unavailable, choose a stable area with good drainage. Use a suitable weather-resistant cover, but avoid trapping excessive moisture underneath it.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions when protecting the exhaust and air intake from moisture or pests. Clearly mark any temporary covers or plugs so they can be removed before starting the engine.
Check the machine periodically throughout winter for leaks, corrosion, moisture, pests, and battery issues. If periodic starting or operation is required, follow the manufacturer's recommended procedure and safety precautions.
When winter ends, remove all temporary covers and plugs, reinstall the battery if necessary, and check the fluids, tracks, hoses, and attachment connections.
Start the machine according to the operator's manual. Check for warning indicators, leaks, or unusual noises, and confirm that the equipment is operating normally before beginning work.
Proper winter storage is an important part of mini excavator maintenance. Keeping your machine clean, protecting key components, and following the correct storage procedures can help maintain its condition during periods of inactivity.
At SHANDING, we encourage customers to follow their machine-specific maintenance guidelines and contact their equipment supplier or service team whenever they need advice on winter preparation, routine maintenance, or long-term storage.
